from €23 audio guide included

Hokusai at Palazzo Bonaparte: a journey through Edo-Period Japan

From March 27 to June 29, Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome celebrates the genius of Katsushika Hokusai with the most important retrospective ever held in Italy. An undisputed master of the ukiyo-e style and a key figure in the global visual imagination, Hokusai portrayed the so-called "Floating World" with a poetic sensibility and modernity that profoundly influenced Western art and music. The exhibition is not only an artistic event, but also the centerpiece of the celebrations for the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Japan.

Thanks to an exceptional loan from the National Museum in Krakow, over 200 works are coming to Rome, in what is the first major international monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist outside of Poland. The exhibition spans the master's entire creative evolution: from traditional cycles, such as the celebrated Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, to absolute icons of art history, such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa and the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. His more innovative works are also featured, including his renowned manga and refined illustrated albums.

Alongside his works on paper, the exhibition offers a multidisciplinary and immersive display that unites art, everyday life, and spirituality. Visitors can admire rare books, armor, helmets, swords, lacquerware, and musical instruments, along with traditional clothing such as kimonos and haori jackets. Curated by Beata Romanowicz and produced by Arthemisia, the initiative enjoys the high patronage of the Ministry of Culture and major Polish and Japanese institutions, confirming itself as an unmissable event, also supported by the Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale.

Useful information: Tickets start at €23, with an audio guide included to delve deeper into the master's masterpieces.
